Exterior paints are made to outlast sun and other weather conditions without peeling and chipping, and interior paints are composed to resist wear and tear. One major  difference between exterior and interior paint is the level of volatile organic compounds (more commonly known as VOCs) that are allowed. 

California requires contractors and paint manufactures to adhere to certain rules when allowing VOC’s in their paint. We always recommend using the lowest possible VOC containing paints on any project regardless of whether it’s interior or exterior.

Some of the coating chemicals contain polymers, which will actually form the surface. They also may include binders that prevent the paint from separating and allow it to stay firmly on the painted surface properly.  In addition, paints contain additives that aid in faster drying times, improve weather resistance, control mildew and keep the color evenly distributed.

Interior paints are also easier to clean since they can easily get marked on or scraped. Some people assume exterior paint will be better inside because they think since it is made to withstand all the outdoor weather elements, it will hold up better inside.
